Proofs

Do you remember the “paperless office?” It was a great idea…in theory. We all thought that with a computer monitor on every desk people would no longer need printed sheets of paper.

What happened? Computers ended up producing more printed pages, not less.

The fact is that though technology changes, human nature remains the same. People simply find it more satisfying to hold paper in their hands.

Photo studios experimented with the same wishful thinking with proofs. They wanted to cut costs by eliminating proofs. The problem? Clients insisted on prints they could touch, sort and select in the old fashioned way.

Why Proofs Make Good Business Sense…

The prevailing theory among many studios, just a couple years ago, was that sales people could show clients images on a computer monitor or a projection screen and convince customers to buy larger and more expensive albums.

What photographers found was that most people couldn’t select images from large events quickly. There were just too many choices.

In the end album orders were no larger…and often smaller…than if the clients decided which pictures to enlarge on their own time.

Online posting worked well for the occasional enlargement after the event. But, posting produced smaller album orders than when people had real photographs in front of them.

That’s why so many studios have gone back to providing proofs to their primary clients. (Brides & grooms, parents, etc.)

Proofs have a feeling of value and substance that is missing from online images. People also have an easier time visualizing how a photograph will enlarge than they do with a screen image. So, enlarging and/or album orders tend to be larger…with less work for studio personnel.

Three Ways You Can Order Proofs…

1) Order 4” x 6” proofs through ROES.

ROES software gives you the ability to edit and sort your thumbnail images to follow the sequence of the event. This can be very useful if you have more than one photographer or camera photographing an event.

If you have a large number of pictures (over 100 images) we would suggest that you burn your JPEG images onto a ROES-formatted CD-R and mail the CD to our laboratory rather than uploading huge files over the Internet.

Color corrections on ROES images are made through automated corrections using Kodak’s DP2 software.
Each proof has your studio name and the JPEG image number imprinted on the back.

2) Order 4” x 6” proofs directly from your JPEG files
without using ROES software.

It is not necessary to go through ROES software to order your proofs. You may just burn your camera JPEG images to a CD-R and mail it to us. Our technicians will individually color-correct each of your images.

Each proof has your studio name and the JPEG image number imprinted on the back.

3) Order Magazine Proofs through iPrints
Professional/ROES.

Magazine Proofs are 6 up or 12 up images printed on a 10” x 13” sheet of photographic paper. Each image has its unique JPEG ID number imprinted below it.

Multiple pages are spiral-bound together to give your clients a fully organized set of previews of their event.

The strong point in favor of magazine proofs is that they provide sequential images that can’t be thrown out of order when your clients view their previews. The smaller images are also much less likely to be illegally copied.

ROES software provides you with a fast, convenient means of sequencing your thumbnail pictures so that side-by-side comparisons of similar shots are available to your clients on the same page.

Magazine proofs receive automated Kodak DP2 corrections and then are fine-tuned by our technicians.
